PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis), involves removing a cell from an IVF embryo to test it for a specific genetic condition before transferring the embryo to the uterus of the recipient.

PGS, preimplantation genetic screening, is the proper term for testing for overall chromosomal normalcy in embryos.  Some cases of IVF failure are due to the transfer of embryos with chromosome abnormalities. PGD for aneuploidy can reduce the likelihood of a chromosome abnormality in a future pregnancy and increases the chance of achieving an ongoing successful pregnancy.

Beside this, PGD is a useful technique to rule out faulty embryos, which might carry defective genes.  Chromosol diseases like trisomy and down syndrome can be ruled out via PGD.  Through PGD- chances of miscarriage can be reduced as the healthy embryo grows successfully and thus higher chance of live birth.
